Fetch Me a Ham Sammich...

Once a week or so we’ll have a sandwich for dinner.

It’s usually a night we have something going on and we’re looking for something quick and easy.

You don’t normally think of a sandwich as a dinner food but like the age-old favorite – having breakfast for dinner – it’s a nice change. I decided to do a twist on it and thought I’d share it with you.

Something or other made me think of a grilled sandwich or a patty melt – a personal favorite – and it kind of went from there. The only thing that’s really different about this sandwich compared to one you might make for your lunch is a little bit of special treatment and the approach.

I “borrowed” some fat from my earlier meals and used it for a touch of butter to use in the pan. All I did was cut out the pecans from my famous yogurt snack and cut back the peanut butter on my morning toast and I had enough to fry the ham and also grill the bread in the pan. Some of my favorite cheese didn’t hurt either.

Check it out…

Grilled Ham & Cheese Sammich:

2 slices (75 grams) Whole Foods® Market San Francisco Sourdough

4 ounces Boar’s Head® Tavern Ham

1 slice Land O’ Lakes® Pepper Jack cheese

7 grams Kerrygold™ Pure Irish Butter

French’s® Classic Yellow Mustard (to taste)

35 grams (1¼ serving) Popchips® Sea Salt chips

The numbers you see above are what I used in order to make it work for me based on the meals I had planned for that particular day. The amount of bread was also based on my experience knowing roughly how much is required for a sandwich of that size. As always, feel free to change ingredients and amounts in order to fit your targets and the level of exactness you want to have eating to those targets.

The Numbers:

593 calories with 33 grams P, 68 grams C, 21 grams F.

The How-To:

Heat up a skillet over medium heat while you weigh out your ingredients. Once it’s hot, melt the butter in the pan, drop the ham in the melted butter and gently swirl it around while it fries, flipping it around so you hit all parts of it. Dredge your bread through the butter and put the cheese on it. The cheese will melt on the top of the bread while the side facing the heat is getting crispy, buttery and toasty. Once the ham is browned, place it on the bread and put the sandwich together. Flip the assembled sandwich every few minutes until it’s brown and crispy and the cheese is melted. Plate it up with your chips and you should have a sandwich that’s quick and easy and a deli meat version of the famous patty melt!

Drop the plate, the knife and spatula used to cook the sandwich in the dishwasher and you’re done. The only thing that gets hand washed is the skillet. A quick wiping of the cooktop and counters and you’re ready to enjoy dessert or the rest of your evening.

And that’s the way it should be…

Regards,

Henry
