Middle Age Health, American Made Strength (The Shortcut Is Not Taking the Shortcut)

Made in America…

Back in the day those three words meant something.

It meant the item upon which those words were etched was unparalleled in quality. It was the best in the world.

They sent shudders of fear through foreign manufacturers.

Those putting their cash on the barrelhead did so with their mind at ease because they knew they were getting the best they could buy for their hard earned money.

Made in America men and women fought across the globe to ensure freedom for everyone.

Made in America fed, clothed and supplied nearly everyone on earth during and after World War II.

Made in America was people who showed up to work every day, worked hard, got better at what they did and took pride in what they built and the fact they worked hard doing it.

There was simply nothing better.

The point of the whole diatribe is to say that great things are achieved through hard work.

There’s no shortcut to success in anything.

A World Series Championship requires offseason preparation, spring training, a grueling 162-game season and a minimum of 11 wins in the post-season. (And that’s not to mention the years and years of playing Little League, high school, college and minor league ball.)

Raising wonderful, responsible children takes from the time they’re in the womb until a couple of decades later and then worrying about them for the rest of your life. (And that’s not to mention the years you spend working or the thousands spent to provide a safe and secure life for them.)

Why is it that people think it’s different when it comes to health, wellness, building strength and getting fit?

Getting stronger and fitter means going to the gym on days you really don’t feel like it. You can’t get out of it. (No, you don’t have to spend hours and hours working out.)

Losing weight means making reasonable choices when it comes to eating instead of going crazy just because that’s what everyone else is doing. (Yes, you can still have treats, go to restaurants and have your favorite foods mixed in.)

Being healthy means heading for the sack at your normal bedtime on nights when you’d really like to stay up late and watch TV. (Of course you can still catch a late movie or concert here and there.)

Health and fitness comes from hard work, perseverance, getting up every time you fall down and doing it again and again. It’s an everyday state of mind.

A lifetime of health and fitness is made up of a lifetime of healthy habits.

It won’t come from a short-term trick or diet hack and it certainly won’t come from a needle.

Nothing is free.

As James Clear said, “The cheat code is the work you’re avoiding.”

Resolve to do the hard things and never be deterred and you won’t be able to see far enough behind you to catch sight of those constantly looking for a shortcut to something that can only be obtained through hard work and perseverance.
